The Goyim Defense League, also known as the GDL, is an internet troll, conspiracy theorist and anti-Jewish[1] network of public personalities active across a number of social media websites, primarily YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Gab.[2][3][4][5] The GDL emerged in 2018 and is led by the Sonoma County-based Californian comedian actor "Handsome Truth" (Jon Minadeo)[6][7] and "Sway Guevara". Others previously associated with the network have included Adam Green of Know More News and Patrick Little, an anti-Jewish candidate who ran for the United States Senate in California against Dianne Feinstein in 2018.[8] They are best known for trolling a number of high profile American celebrities into making coded anti-Jewish statements on the website Cameo.

Little's "Name the Jew" Tour

[edit]

Patrick Little, a member of the GDL,[8] ran on a Republican Party ticket in the 2018 United States Senate election in California for Dianne Feinstein's seat. A native of Albany, California, Little is an IT engineer who had previously served in the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan.[9] Little's campaign gained attention in May 2018 when he polled second only to Feinstein in a SurveyUSA poll with 18% of the general electorate and 46% with Republicans.[10][11] However, the California Republican Party denounced Little and he was removed from their convention in San Diego, while stamping on an Israeli flag, claiming "They just had me expelled from the building because I won’t serve Israel", calling the Californian Republican Party "Zionist stooges."[10]

Just after the election, Little toured the United States in July and August 2018, with placards bearing anti-Jewish phrases such as "Jews Rape Kids", "Jews Killed 30 Million", "The Holocaust is a Lie"[12] and pronouncing openly in public a number of anti-Jewish conspiracy theories, such as claiming that the Holocaust is a hoax, that Israel played a major role in the 9/11 terrorist bombings, that Jews controlled the African slave trade before the Civil War, that "Jews kill Christians — they do it a lot historically."[13] These so-called "J-Walks" were recorded and the videos put on the internet on platforms such as YouTube and BitChute by Little and the GDL. Little's "Name the Jew" Tour ran from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine, stopping off at Olympia, Seattle, Missoula, Helena, Alberton, Fargo, Minneapolis, Skokie, Providence, Princeton, Boston and New York City.[12][14]

Eventually, Little returned 54,507 votes, with 1.4% of the total vote share.[15][16] Little claimed that he was the victim of voter fraud by "the Jewish supremacists and the Zionists" and stated that he would run in the 2020 United States presidential election.[15]

Trolling Cameo celebrities

[edit]

In November 2018, a number of celebrities who feature on the Cameo app, who provide personalised "shoutouts" to people who pay a certain amount of money, up to $500, were successfully trolled by the GDL and gained the group significant international media attention by getting celebrities to give coded anti-Jewish shoutouts.[1][17] Among those implicated were NFL quarterback Brett Favre, rapper Soulja Boy and comedian Andy Dick.[18][19][20][8][21]

For example, Favre said "shoutout to the Handsome Truth and the GDL boys," and "Keep fighting, too, and don’t ever forget the USS Liberty and the men and women who died on that day." Referencing an American ship which was attacked by the Israelis in 1967 during the Six-Day War.[1] While, Soulja Boy asked viewers to check out the GDL anthem "Name the Juice” (ie - Name the Jew) on SoundCloud, saying “GDL for life, bitch.”[22][23] The rap song which Soulja Boy references features anti-Jewish lyrics such as "I heard your quotes from your Talmud book, you're a fake Jew bitch and you never got cooked, never got gassed" and "they wanna tax and take whats ours, lie about ovens, lampshades and showers, wanna play the victim, but you're really a coward, thats why I name the Jew every second of hours."[24]

Ellie Hall, a journalist at BuzzFeed News described the GDL as white supremacist in an article about them,[17] while Minadeo ("Handsome Truth") in an interview about his group has claimed that the GDL support all "goyim" (ie - non-Jews) rallying together regardless of race against Jewish influence.[25] The name of the organisation itself is a parody of the Jewish Defense League and the ADL (Anti-Defamation League).[20] The Goyim Defense League was listed by MEMRI in a March 2019 Special Report of groups enagaged in "Online Incitement against Jews."[26] Rival anti-Jewish website such as the white nationalist Renegade Tribune on the other hand have claimed that the GDL and Handsome Truth are "anti-white".[27]
